Most Common Reasons a Bosch Dryer Keeps Tripping the Breaker
- Damaged supply connection: A loose, overheated, wet, or carbonized plug, receptacle, cord, terminal connection, or branch-circuit connection can create excessive current or leakage. Visible discoloration, melting, heat, buzzing, or arcing makes this an immediate stop-use condition. Bosch manuals require a properly installed supply and prohibit operating a damaged appliance.
- Dryer electrical fault: A heater on an applicable electric/vented or condenser platform, motor winding, compressor or heat-pump electrical circuit, wiring harness, line filter, or control can short to chassis or draw abnormal current. Timing narrows the test but does not identify the part.
- Circuit or breaker fault: A weak, incorrect, shared, loose, or otherwise defective circuit can trip under the dryer's load. The dryer and building circuit must be separated by measurement; replacing appliance parts cannot prove the circuit is sound.
- Moisture where it should not be: A leak, drain overflow, recent wet cleaning, or water at a connection can create a ground-fault path. Do not energize the dryer to see whether it has dried out.
- Airflow-related overheating is a different protective event: A blocked filter or exhaust can cause poor drying and thermal protection inside some dryers, but it does not by itself prove why the building breaker opened. The electrical trip still requires electrical isolation.
What the Timing Changes
- Trips while plugged in but before Start: Keep it disconnected. Diagnosis prioritizes the cord/terminal, line filter, always-energized wiring and control supply, plus the receptacle and branch circuit.
- Trips as the drum starts: The motor/start circuit and wiring become important proof targets. A jammed drum is possible evidence, not permission to force it.
- Trips when heat should begin: On resistance-heated platforms, the heater circuit becomes a priority. On heat-pump models, compressor, inverter and related wiring require platform-specific testing. Do not transfer a heating-element diagnosis to a Bosch heat-pump dryer.
- Trips only after running: Heat-expanded insulation faults, an overheating connection, motor load, compressor load, or circuit/breaker heating must be measured. Runtime alone cannot select a part.
- Trips after a leak or cleaning: Treat moisture exposure as the leading safety context and keep power off until the source and insulation condition are verified.

Bosch's US no-start guidance tells owners to check whether a fuse has blown or a breaker has tripped. That is a one-time state check, not authorization to keep resetting a breaker. Platform Differences
- Heat-pump / Self-Cleaning Condenser: Do not assume a conventional heating element. The compressor, inverter, fans, pumps and controls are service-level electrical branches. Current WQB documentation also carries an R290 refrigerant boundary: do not puncture, heat, open or modify the sealed system.
- Condenser with resistance heat: Heater leakage is one possible professional test branch, alongside motor, wiring, supply connection and controls. A removable heat exchanger does not give access to electrical diagnosis.
- Legacy vented: Exhaust restriction belongs in maintenance, while heater, motor, cord, terminal and branch-circuit faults remain electrical tests. Vent cleaning is not proof that the breaker problem is solved.
Safe Checks Before Service
- Record the event once: Note whether it tripped at plug-in, Start, heat onset, after several minutes, or after water/cleaning. Do not recreate the trip.
- Photograph without touching damage: Record the breaker position, displayed code, E-Nr label and any safely visible discoloration, water, melting or soot.
- Leave the circuit off: If the dryer can be unplugged without touching a hot, wet, loose or damaged plug, disconnect it. Otherwise leave the breaker off and wait for an electrician or qualified technician.
- Check the exact manual: Use the E-Nr to identify the required circuit and platform; do not change breaker size or use an adapter or extension cord.
What Not to Do
- Do not reset the breaker repeatedly or hold it on.

When to Stop Using the Dryer
One repeated trip is enough to stop. Keep power off for smoke, arcing, electrical odor, hot or melted connections, water near wiring, shock/tingling, or any trip that occurs before the dryer starts. Do not resume use until the fault and any heat or moisture damage are identified.

Can I reset the breaker once?
If the breaker was already reset and trips again with the dryer, stop. Repeated resets can re-energize a short or overheated connection and erase useful timing evidence.
Does a trip when heat starts prove the heating element is bad?
