Most Common Reasons a Bosch Dryer Overheats or Smells Burnt
- Lint or a restricted approved airflow path is retaining heat: A loaded lint screen, blocked front inlet, soiled model-approved exchanger path, or—on legacy vented WTA models—a restricted metal exhaust can increase drying time and heat stress. This is a possible contributor, not permission to restart after a burning event.
- A foreign or unsuitable material is heating inside the dryer: Pocket items, oils, foam or rubber, plastics, and garment hardware can smoke, melt, or create odor. Bosch manuals specifically warn about flammable/oil-contaminated loads and foam-rubber materials.

Bosch Platform Boundaries
- WQB heat-pump: The checked WQB245AXUC manual uses combustible R290 refrigerant. Bosch says to keep naked flames and ignition sources away and not to damage the refrigerant pipes. If the cabinet or circuit is damaged, do not inspect or open it; arrange authorized service.
- WTG/WTB condenser: Use only the heat-exchanger/condenser cleaning access and method authorized by the exact manual. Do not treat a ventless condenser model as though it has a household exhaust duct.
- WTA legacy vented: The official legacy manual requires outdoor metal exhaust, warns against plastic/non-metal flexible duct, and assigns periodic interior/exhaust cleaning to qualified service personnel.
What You Can Check Safely After Shutdown
- Record evidence: From a safe distance, photograph the display, the complete rating plate including E-Nr, cord/outlet discoloration, visible smoke residue, and the affected load.
- After full cooling: Remove only the accessible lint screen and visible loose item if doing so requires no tools and no contact with damaged material.
- Describe the odor: Note whether it smelled like hot wiring, rubber, scorched lint, chemical/plastic material, or smoke, and whether noise, an error, leak, or breaker event came first.
What Not to Do and When to Stop
- Any burning odor, smoke, glow, melting, abnormal cabinet heat, repeated breaker trip, hot or damaged plug/outlet, or suspected refrigerant-circuit damage is a no-restart condition.

Is very warm laundry always overheating?
No. Bosch manuals document model-specific hot-load or cooling states: WTG says the door, drum and laundry may be hot, while WQB can display “Hot” during a cooling process. Warmth after an otherwise normal cycle is not, by itself, proof of overheating. A burning or smoky odor remains the separate stop-use event.
