Why the Door May Still Be Locked

1. Self Clean is active and the safety lock is normal

Bosch Self Clean automatically locks the physical door during the high-temperature cleaning cycle. A hot door, active cleaning display, or lock icon is a wait condition, not a reason to pull harder on the handle.

Use only the cancellation control shown in the exact E-Nr manual if the cycle must be cancelled. Then wait for the oven to cool. Cancelling the cycle does not make a hot oven unlock immediately.

2. The cycle ended or was interrupted, but the oven is still cooling

The checked Bosch manual separates control families. On covered 500 Series controls, the knobs return to Off; the door remains locked until the oven cools. On covered 800 and Benchmark controls, cancellation uses Oven Clear/Off or Clear/Off, and the display may show COOLING DOWN until the oven reaches a safe state, followed by SELF CLEAN FINISHED.

The fan may continue during cooling. That observation alone does not prove a temperature sensor, fan, latch, or control failure. Record the display and wait until the door and cavity are fully cool.

3. The oven is cool, but the physical lock state did not clear

For the checked manual family, Bosch gives one specific owner action when the oven is cool and still locked: turn the circuit breaker off, wait exactly five minutes, then turn it back on. This is not permission for repeated breaker cycling.

Perform that reset only after the oven is fully cool and only when the oven circuit is electrically safe; any electrical or water warning ends owner action. If the lock remains engaged, stop.

4. The commanded unlock, latch movement, feedback, or cooling state is not completing

A persistent lock after full cooling and one exact reset requires diagnosis. The possible proof areas include the commanded lock state, latch or actuator movement, position-switch feedback, sensed oven temperature, control output, and supply.

Those are measurement targets, not parts to replace from the symptom. Current Bosch owner guidance does not say that a motor, switch, sensor, or board is the universal cause.

Bosch Lock Words That Change the Answer

Self Clean owns the physical high-temperature door lock in the checked manual. Panel Lock disables touch keys; it is not documented as physically locking the door. A lit Panel Lock indicator with an openable door belongs to the control-setting instructions for the exact model.

Cancel labels also vary. The checked family uses different actions and wording across 500, 800, and Benchmark controls. Do not apply a knob instruction to a touch-control model or a current sequence to an older oven without checking the complete E-Nr.

Bosch's current US error page says to record an E plus number and contact support if the fault persists. It does not establish one universal E115 meaning for all Bosch US wall ovens. The exact E-Nr manual controls code interpretation.

Safe Checks

  • Preserve the display: Photograph Self Clean, COOLING DOWN, SELF CLEAN FINISHED, the lock icon, or the complete error code.
  • Use the exact cancel control: If cancellation is needed, follow the complete E-Nr manual and wait for the oven to cool fully.
  • Use one cool-oven reset: If the door and cavity are fully cool but the physical lock remains, turn the breaker off for exactly five minutes, then restore it once.
  • Stop after the reset: If the lock remains, leave the door closed and record the E-Nr/FD, control family, time since cancellation, fan behavior, and code.

When to Stop

  • Persistent cool lock: Stop after a fully cool oven remains locked following the one five-minute reset.
  • Electrical or fire warning: Stop immediately for smoke, burning or electrical odor, sparking, a repeated breaker trip, water exposure, or abnormal electrical behavior.
  • Door damage: Stop for a damaged handle or glass.
  • Hot surface: Keep people away until Self Clean cooling is complete.
  • No forced release: Never force the door, insert a tool, attempt a manual latch release, remove the control panel or door, bypass the lock, or perform voltage/continuity tests.

What Diagnosis Must Confirm

The technician should preserve the displayed state before clearing anything and confirm:

  • whether the control is commanding lock or unlock;
  • whether the latch/actuator moves through its designed travel;
  • whether position feedback agrees with the actual latch position;
  • whether the sensed cooling/temperature state is plausible;
  • whether control output and supply reach the lock system correctly;
  • whether a mechanical obstruction or door-geometry problem prevents release;
  • whether the persistent code has a model-specific meaning in the exact E-Nr documentation.

That sequence distinguishes a normal cooling lock from a mechanical latch, feedback, temperature-state, supply, or control-output problem without guessing a part.

What to Record Before Service

  • Identity: Complete E-Nr and FD number; 500, 800, Benchmark, or unknown control family.
  • Display: Exact words, lock icon, and complete error code.
  • Cycle event: Whether Self Clean was active, completed, cancelled, or interrupted by power loss.
  • Cooling state: Whether the door and cavity are fully cool and whether the fan continues.
  • Control response: Whether buttons respond or only beep.
  • Reset result: Time of the one five-minute breaker reset and what changed afterward.
