Most Common Reasons a Bosch Refrigerator Is Freezing Food

  • The cold-storage setting does not match the food: The checked B36CT US manual allows its cold-storage compartment to be set from 29°F to 40°F. Bosch specifically warns that fruit, vegetables, drinks, and snacks may freeze below 32°F and reserves the 29°F setting for meat and fish. Frozen produce in that drawer can therefore be a storage-setting mismatch rather than a failed refrigerator.
  • Food is in front of an inner vent or touching the back wall: Bosch tells owners to leave space between food, ventilation openings, and the back panel. Direct exposure to a cold-air outlet or cold rear surface can freeze one package or one shelf position while temperatures elsewhere remain acceptable.
  • Super cooling, Freshness mode, or a low setpoint is active: B36CT controls can cool the refrigerator compartment as cold as possible during Super cooling, while Freshness mode and ordinary setpoints establish different targets. A mode indicator or recent setting change belongs ahead of sensor or control replacement.
  • Loading interferes with MultiAirFlow circulation: Bosch's current refrigerator language describes MultiAirFlow as circulating air throughout the compartment, and its manual says not to block internal openings. Overpacked shelves can create uneven exposure and weaken the temperature reading's relationship to food temperature.
  • Temperature sensing, air control, or cooling command is inaccurate: If central locations on multiple shelves remain too cold after a full stabilization period, correct settings, open vents, and appropriate loading, a true overcooling condition is possible. Service must compare actual compartment temperatures with sensor readings and commanded airflow before a thermistor, damper, fan, or control is named.

Use Food Location and Actual Temperature Together

  • Only produce or drinks in the cold-storage drawer freeze: Check that drawer's food preset and temperature, not only the main setpoint.
  • Only items against the back wall or vent freeze: Move them forward, leave an air gap, and record the temperature over time.
  • One shelf freezes while others are normal: Record the shelf, vent location, package position, and temperature.
  • Food freezes throughout the fresh-food compartment: Record Super cooling/Freshness states and compare more than one central thermometer location.
  • The display looks normal but measured temperature stays too low: The display setpoint is not proof of actual food temperature. Preserve a time-and-location log for diagnosis.

Bosch Zones Are Not One Temperature

On the checked B36CT family, the main refrigerator compartment can be set from 33°F to 43°F, while the cold-storage compartment has separate food-specific settings from 29°F to 40°F. Bosch VitaFresh and cold-storage features are intended to create distinct conditions. A universal recommendation such as “set every Bosch compartment to 37°F” ignores that architecture.

The complete E-Nr and FD number identify the exact drawer, control names, and ranges. A Bosch series name alone cannot determine whether a visible drawer is humidity-only, temperature-controlled, or part of another platform.

Safe Checks

  • Photograph every setting: Capture main refrigerator, cold-storage, Super cooling, Freshness, Eco, Vacation, and app states.
  • Map the frozen food: Mark shelf/drawer, distance from the rear wall, nearby vent, and which food types freeze.
  • Use a refrigerator thermometer: Measure central locations rather than pressing a sensor against the back wall. Record time and location.
  • Clear air openings: Move packages away from vents and leave space behind food without blocking a cold area deliberately.
  • Match food to drawer setting: Reserve below-freezing meat/fish presets for the foods Bosch assigns to them.
  • Allow stabilization: After one documented setting or loading correction, wait the interval in the exact manual before interpreting the result.

What Not to Do and When to Stop

  • Do not cover vents with tape, foam, cardboard, or food to reduce cold air.
  • Do not remove air-channel, fan, sensor, or evaporator covers.
  • Do not test thermistors, dampers, fans, or controls with live voltage.
  • Do not chip frost or use a heat gun, hair dryer, or boiling water.
  • Do not keep temperature-sensitive medication in a compartment that is freezing unpredictably.
