Most Common Reasons a Bosch Microwave Door Won't Close

  • Food debris or packing material blocks the seal or latch path: The checked HMB manual specifically tells owners to check for packing or other material at the door seal. A cool, visible obstruction may be removed without tools. If the undamaged door then closes normally and stays closed, the proof ends at the obstruction.
  • The glass tray, rack, cookware, or load protrudes from the cavity: An off-center accessory or oversized item can contact the door before it reaches the frame. Reposition only the model-approved tray, rack, or load. Do not force the door around it.
  • The built-in or OTR installation is out of alignment: Uneven trim, cabinet pressure, or a shifted appliance can alter the hinge-to-strike relationship. A recent installation and visibly unequal door gaps point to mounting or cabinet geometry; the installer or technician must verify level, clearances, and door alignment.
  • The door, hinge, latch, or seal is damaged: Bosch warns not to operate a microwave with a bent/damaged door, broken or loose hinges/latches, or damaged seals. Sagging, a broken hook, looseness, a cracked panel, or a door that rebounds belongs to this stop-use state. Service proves door integrity and the interlock sequence before use.

Physical Closure or Door-Signal Problem?

This page owns a door that physically will not seat and latch. If the door closes evenly but the display still says it is open or Start is refused, record that separate powered no-start state. Do not manipulate the latch to make the control change.

Safe Checks

  • Switch off the microwave and let the cavity, tray, and cookware cool.
  • Remove loose food debris from the visible frame and seal path with an approved soft cloth.
  • Remove visible packing material.
  • Center the exact-model tray, ring, rack, and load.
  • Compare the door gaps and photograph any sag, bend, loose hinge, damaged latch, or seal mark.
  • Photograph the complete E-Nr and FD.

What Not to Do

  • Do not slam, lift, push, or hold the door closed during operation.
  • Do not bend a latch hook or tighten/adjust hinges without service instructions.
  • Do not remove the door, trim, case, or control panel.
  • Do not bypass or tape a door switch.
  • Do not run a test when closure is unreliable.

When the Microwave Must Stay Off

Keep it off for any bent or damaged door, loose/broken hinge or latch, damaged seal, uneven closure, door that pops open, or control behavior that changes unpredictably when the door moves. Sparks, smoke, or odor make the stop immediate.

What Diagnosis Must Confirm

Service verifies cabinet/mounting geometry, door straightness, hinge and latch engagement, seal condition, and the complete interlock sequence. After door work, the required microwave-safety checks must be completed; a latch click alone is not proof.
