Why a Bosch Microwave Fan Keeps Running After Cooking
- Normal cooling-fan run-on: The checked HMB manual says the fan motor may continue after use to cool electrical components; food can be removed while it runs. The HMV manual likewise says cooling fans may run for a while after Clear/Off and switch off automatically. If the timer and microwave output ended and the fan stops after cooling, no fault is proved.
- The OTR vent fan is protecting a hot appliance area: HMV5053U documentation says high temperature around the microwave can automatically start the vent fan at low speed. During this state it cannot be manually turned off; it stops after internal parts cool. Heat from the range below can be the trigger.
- Restricted airflow makes cooling take longer: Blocked exterior vents or loaded owner-serviceable filters can retain heat. Keep all visible vents clear and maintain only the exact-manual filters. Do not invent a universal time limit; compare a changed duration with the same model and use conditions.
- A temperature input, fan command, or control path remains active: If fan-only operation never stops after the appliance is cool, begins from a cold standby state, or becomes loud/strange, Bosch routes the condition to support. Service verifies the temperature inputs, fan command, motor output, and control state before a sensor, relay, or board is named.
- The microwave cooking output itself has not stopped: Continued food heating, timer activity, cavity light behavior, or operation that ignores Clear/Off is not ordinary fan run-on. Disconnect power if safe and leave the appliance off for urgent diagnosis.
Identify Which Fan Is Running
- Built-in cooling fan: Air/noise comes from appliance cooling paths after microwave use.
- OTR vent fan: Air is drawn from above the range and may have manual speeds or automatic low operation.
- Turntable or another moving system: A clicking or scrape may be misidentified as a fan; record the sound and state rather than opening the case.
Safe Checks
1) Press Clear/Off once and confirm the cook timer and microwave output end.
2) Note whether the appliance is built-in or over the range.
3) Keep every visible intake and outlet clear.
4) Record when the fan began, whether the range below is hot, and when the fan stops.
5) Record whether the sound is normal airflow or newly loud, grinding, or erratic.
6) Photograph the complete E-Nr.
What Not to Do
- Do not block a vent to make the fan quieter.
- Do not repeatedly cycle the breaker during normal cooling.
- Do not remove the case, blower, fan, control panel, or temperature sensor.
- Do not assume a stuck relay from duration alone.
- Do not keep using the microwave if heating continues after Stop.
When to Stop Using the Microwave
Leave it off if cooking output continues, the fan runs indefinitely after the appliance is cool, it starts repeatedly from a cold state, or there is smoke, burning/electrical odor, arcing, abnormal heat, grinding, or a breaker trip.
What Diagnosis Must Confirm
Diagnosis separates microwave output from fan-only cooling, identifies cooling versus OTR vent command, verifies temperature-sensor inputs, command state, motor current/airflow, and control output, and reproduces the failure from a known cold state. That proof is required before a relay, sensor, motor, or board is selected.
