Most Common Reasons a Bosch Microwave Sparks or Arcs

  • Metal cookware, utensils, ties, or foil is creating the arc: The Bosch HMB manual tells owners to remove metallic utensils, cookware, and metal ties. It limits foil to narrow strips with at least one inch between the foil and the cavity walls. A visible metal item at the arc location is useful evidence, but a sustained arc still requires checking the cavity for damage before use resumes.
  • Food residue is carbonized on the tray, roller path, or cavity bottom: Bosch includes cleaning the turntable, roller ring, and cavity bottom in its sparking response. When cool and off, remove residue using the approved cleaning method without scraping the coating. If a burn, chip, blister, or hole remains, cleaning is not a repair endpoint.
  • Visible door glass, seal, tray, or cavity damage remains after the arc: Bosch warns that sparks can irreparably damage the inside door glass and that a damaged microwave, door, hinge, latch, seal, or sealing surface must not be operated. Photograph the location and complete E-Nr; service must verify that the cavity and door remain safe before return to use.
  • The arc has no owner-visible load cause or appears outside the food cavity: Smoke, odor, or an arc outside the visible cookware/residue area is a stop-use condition. Do not remove the case. Qualified service must localize the electrical event and verify the door/interlock and microwave-safety condition.

Immediate Action

1) Stop the cycle. If there is flame or smoke, follow emergency guidance and do not open the door into an active cavity fire.

2) Disconnect power only if it is safe to do so.

3) Wait for the cavity and load to cool.

4) Photograph the arc location, cookware, and any mark before cleaning.

5) Remove the load and visible metal item.

6) Inspect the door, seals, cavity, tray, roller rest, and visible cover/support without removing parts.

There is no useful reason to run the microwave empty or perform another arc test.

Bosch Foil and Cookware Boundary

Bosch does not support a universal statement that every amount of foil is safe or unsafe. On the checked HMB manual, foil must be limited to narrow strips and kept at least one inch from the interior walls. Other platforms may use racks or accessories with different instructions. The exact E-Nr manual controls; improvised metal, twist ties, or cookware with metallic trim should not be used.

What Not to Do

  • Do not run the microwave again to see whether it sparks twice.
  • Do not run it empty.
  • Do not sand, paint, patch, or scrape a damaged cavity surface.
  • Do not remove or replace a waveguide/cavity cover without model-specific service approval.
  • Do not remove the outer case or bypass a door switch.

When the Microwave Must Stay Off

Keep it off for any flame, smoke, burning odor, repeated arc, burn mark that remains after gentle cleaning, chipped/blistered cavity, hole, loose or burned cover/support, cracked tray, door/hinge/latch/seal damage, or a spark that appears outside the food cavity.

What Diagnosis Must Confirm

Service must identify the exact arc location and trigger, inspect the door/interlock and cavity surfaces, confirm the correct model-specific cover/rack/support, and perform required electrical and microwave-safety checks. Replacing a visibly scorched part without identifying why it arced is incomplete.
